Clinic for execs finally gets going

Aimed at upscale couples who visit Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG – After two year of planning, ground was broken this week on the Williamsburg Health Evaluation Center.

The upscale clinic on North Henry Street will deal in high-tech, high-dollar health screenings. It’s modeled after the Executive Evaluation Center in Norfolk.

Although the site has been cleared for months, construction was delayed for several reasons. Marketing director Carol Bo9wler said there was a problem with the title of the property and they switched interior design architects. Lyall Design is said to have more experience in the layout of medical facilities for high-tech equipment.

“Lastly, we were a bit slow in making some decisions on specifications for the center, and that did hold us up as well,” Bowler said.

I.W. Enochs Inc, of Hopewell will take about a year to build the clinic. The 13,000 square feet will be expandable to 23,000. Plans are for the center to handle up to 10 patients a day and expand to 20 once demand grows.

Henry Street was chosen after the original site, occupied by the old Craft House, was rejected as too small for the clinic.

The focus of the facility is on prevention and early detection of illness and disease rather than treating ill patients. The goal is to discover health problems early and refer patients to a specialist or back to their own doctors for treatment.

Similar diagnostic and medical screening centers for executives are gaining popularity in resort areas as an alternative to chewing up time with doctors’ appointments while at work Colonial Williamsburg encouraged the concept as a way to entice older, affluent couples to kill two birds with one stone while visiting here.
