First Aid Courses That Could Help You Save Lives

It’s no secret that first aid can mean the difference between life and death.  While it’s not necessarily the final stop for most people who are seriously injured, it can certainly pave the way for them to survive when they usually wouldn’t.  First aid is the bridge between injury and the hospital and has been the saving grace of many a victim.  In certain situations (particularly the workplace) it helps to have the knowledge and skills required to perform first aid.  This is particularly true seeing as most accidents happen at work.  If you want to ensure that you have the skills needed to help should an accident occur you may want to consider taking one of the following courses:

As the first point of contact during a work emergency, you could literally be responsible for saving a life.  In some instances, your company will appoint a designated first aid representative that will wear a specific uniform to show that they are the person to go to when there is an injury.  An emergency first aid course will qualify you for this role and ensure that action is taken immediately to help the injured party.  A number of organisations run emergency first aid at work courses including the Red Cross and St John’s Ambulance so you should be able to find one in your area without too much trouble.

In order for you to partake in this course, you will need to be able to work with people at all times.  If you have a medical condition that prevents you from doing this, you will not be eligible.  Otherwise, you can expect to go over a number of helpful modules such as assessing wounds, treating fractures, dislocations and burns and dealing with shock and basic life support.  This course is slightly more advanced than the emergency first aid course and will prove more challenging for those who want to progress.

First Aid at Work Refresher HSE

While you may be quite familiar with your basic first aid, you may also find that when faced with the situation of being needed, you freeze up.  The best way to recap and refresh your skills is to take a summary course to remind you of, and allow you to perfect, certain procedures.  Many people also opt to take refresher courses every 12 months in order to make sure that they are still following the right procedures as it is not uncommon for preferred methods to change over time.

Automated External Defibrillator Training (AED) Also Known As Defib Training

You’ll need hands on experience when it comes to implementing any first aid that you learn but perhaps more so with defib training.  This involves learning to resuscitate using a defibrillator that could potentially save the lives of those who need it.  It can be very dangerous to use a defibrillator if you don’t know what you are doing so this is a great course to take especially if you work amongst people.

In the child minding industry safety is key and being armed with knowledge could save a child’s life in case of an emergency.  This is why it’s particularly important to know what to do when a child is injured or suddenly ill. You will need to know how to dislodge food or objects that are choking the child, how to deal with high fevers, cuts, burns, bruises, scrapes and broken bones.  While their parents are away, you are responsible for their wellbeing.  Make sure you have the knowledge you need to do so by taking a first aid course, specifically tailored for child minders.
